Conferințele de la Șosea - 19 Nov. 2024

The National Museum of the Romanian Peasant invites you on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, at 6:00 PM, to Sala Media, for a new edition of Conferințele de la Șosea.

Hands. Masks. Craftsmen is a mini-series of events that invites you into the workshops of two traditional mask makers: Șerban Terțiu and Uwe Boghian. The traditional techniques, knowledge, and contemporary processes used in crafting ritual masks from two regions of Romania (Vrancea and Brașov counties) were documented by research teams from the partner institutions of the European project Unveiling Arts and Crafts Behind the Masks: The National Museum of the Romanian Peasant and the University of Bucharest.

The first meeting in the series, on November 19th, centres upon the creation and performance contexts of ritual masks that are part of the Chipăruș funeral ritual (from the community of Nereju, Vrancea County).

The invited speakers for this edition are: Adelina Dogaru and Adrian Stoicescu (University of Bucharest); Iuliana Dumitru (MNȚR). Moderators: Anamaria Iuga and Georgiana Vlahbei (MNȚR)

The audience, interested in the symbolic and material world of traditional ritual masks, is invited to watch video materials resulting from field research:

  • UNIBUC production (55 min.)
Craftsman: Șerban Terțiu (Nereju, Vrancea County)
Research team: Adrian Stoicescu, Adelina Dogaru, Gabriel Tamaș
    Cinematography: Cătălin Burlacu

    Editing: Georgiana Vlahbei

Conferințele de la Șosea are a long-standing series at MNȚR, inaugurated by Vintilă Mihăilescu, where invited guests — specialists or creators — host meetings and discussions on contemporary topics in ethnology, anthropology, and related cultural fields, based on their research, fieldwork, or studies.
