The documentary miniseries MASCARADAS (three episodes), produced by the ICAL News Agency, premieres to promote the cultural value of masks in Castilla y León.

The documentary series aims to foster a greater and deeper understanding of these masked rituals in Castilla y León by designing an audiovisual project that records and catalogs a significant number of these traditions. In doing so, it seeks to highlight a cultural, social, and economic asset of special relevance to rural areas, contributing to Castilla y León’s status as a region rich in historical, ethnographic, and heritage traditions. The miniseries has a strong public service purpose, aligning with initiatives led by the regional government to promote these traditions and, in turn, support the development and progress of these communities.

Over two years, under the direction of graphic editor Eduardo Margareto, nearly thirty festivals have been documented, covering winter celebrations, carnivals, the Corpus Christi festivity, and summer masquerades. Viewers will have the opportunity to discover these ancestral rituals that shape the folklore and identity of the communities where they take place.

The documentary includes first-person testimonies from the main figures behind these masquerades, many of whom are collaborators of MASKS, alongside interviews with renowned researchers such as Bernardo Calvo Brioso, José Luis Alonso Ponga, Pepe Calvo, Ana Zamora, José Luis Puerto, and MASKS members António Tiza and Pilar Panero. The documentary is also a posthumous tribute to the esteemed researcher Bernardo Calvo Brioso.

According to its director, Mascaradas “is a tribute to all those who, through their dedication, keep the traditions of Castilla y León alive.”
