The Pandosia workshop - clay and papier-mâché modelling course

The course will take place between Matera and the innermost area of Basilicata, with the possibility of attending lessons that in a first phase will take place in the City of the Sassi, concluding in the clays of Aliano.

Over the centuries, the two places have been characterised by the presence of craftsmen and artists who used papier-mâché and clay to produce artefacts of various kinds, from sacred statuary to the creation of ephemeral decorations and everyday objects.

Under the guidance of Nicola Toce, with the participation and support of CNA Matera and La Lopa, it will be possible to learn the ancient techniques of papier-mâché and terracotta for the creation of any type of object, sculpture and decoration. Renaissance techniques will be integrated with contemporary, innovative and experimental ones.

Creative inspiration will be suggested by the historical and natural context of the venues where the meetings will take place, Matera and Aliano. Each participant will be able to work on an individual project or propose a theme to be shared with one or more people, forming small groups. In addition to notions of working with the above-mentioned materials and modelling, knowledge will be imparted on the use of natural colours and glues, the creation of sculptural supports, patinas, gilding and glazing.

The course will take place in one- or two-week cycles in July and August and registration will be possible from June. People of all ages can participate in the course.
