5th Conference on Local Studies by the IEZ "Florián de Ocampo" - 9 Nov. 2024

Our masks are part of the 5th Conference on Local Studies organised by the IEZ ‘Florián de Ocampo’.

On Saturday 9th November the Institute of Zamoran Studies ‘Florián de Ocampo’ held a conference in the village of Villardeciervos in the heart of the Sierra de la Culebra (province of Zamora, Spain) to present some research on its territory. We could not miss the masks, so important in many villages of the area. Our main researcher, Professor Pilar Panero from the University of Valladolid, gave an informative lecture entitled ‘Rituals and masks in Zamora’. In this conference she emphasized that the rites with mask, like other rites, are the key that makes it possible to become part of the so-called traditional society from family environments to other more open ones such as communities of groups interested in the culture of the mask as is our MASKS project. She also reminded that the mask culture survives because of its continuous adaptation to modern ways of life. Pilar Panero thanked the Zamoran groups of the Sierra de la Culebra, such as the Antruejo de Villanueva de Valrojo (Ferreras de Arriba) and Los Carochos de Riofrío de Aliste, for their participation in the project and wished to incorporate others.
