The 14th edition of the International Gathering of Anthropological Masks, held on Sunday 1 June 2025 in Tricarico, Basilicata (Italy), combined spectacle and reflection. In the villetta comunale, the talk ‘Anthropological Dialogues’, promoted by the Pro Loco and the municipality, presented the European project ‘MASKS - Unveiling the Arts and the Works Behind the Masks’, a platform that maps heritages, craft knowledge and rituals linked to Mediterranean masks.
The discussion, led by Bruna Accardo and Federico Santangelo, involved anthropologists Vita Santoro, Sandra Ferracuti and Antonella D'Auria (University of Basilicata). With them, Leo Montemurro, president of CNA Basilicata, and Gaetano Armenio, publisher of ‘L'Immagine’, highlighted the spin-offs on craft industries, experiential tourism and training.
Thanks to MASKS, the Tricarico gathering is confirmed as an international hub for scholars, artisans and travellers.
The portal unveilingthemasks.uva.es offers videos, podcasts and fact sheets on more than fifty European masks, facilitating networks between heritage communities.
The appointment with folklore will return in 2026, ready to show the inexhaustible human creativity behind each mask.
