‘Carnival: the rite behind the mask’ is the name of the activity organised on 18 October by the City Council of Murcia in collaboration with the Department of Social Anthropology of the University of Murcia in the cultural centre Llano de Brujas.
During the evening, the result of a workshop led by Francisco Javier Muelas Ruiz on the focus on the Carnival of Llano de Brujas was presented for the first time. A video was projected with testimonies of the neighbours of this district of Murcia in which they explained their links with the festival and investigated the celebration in the past. The table served to show the group the results of the workshop with a view to recovering some of the practices lost in the carnivals of 2025.
Professor Fina Antón Hurtado from the University of Murcia coordinated the round table with the participation of the technician from the Town Council of Llano de Brujas and the anthropology professors Eloy Gómez Pellón from the University of Cantabria and M.ª Pilar Panero García from the University of Valladolid. The latter explained that one of the values of MASKS is to promote masks, as they are emblematic symbols for groups that keep them. Many are linked to Carnival, although this is also shown in numerous performances far from their places of origin and the context in which they were born.
MASKS would like to thank Professor Fina Antón Hurtado for her friendly invitation to share the experiences of carnivals that are very different in form, although with a common essence.
